AmeriFreight has run a hybrid operation out of Chicago for years — part asset carrier, part freight broker, with 75+ trucks on the road and a brokerage arm that keeps the network full. For a long time, the business ran on an on-premise server tucked into the back office. It worked, until it didn't. By late 2023, the IT situation had become a liability. The server was aging, patches were behind, and internal audits had flagged security concerns that couldn't be ignored. Leadership knew the question was no longer whether to migrate — it was how to do it without blowing up the EDI relationships that kept their broker business alive.
The EDI connections were the real hostage in the situation. AmeriFreight had spent years building trading partner integrations — automated load tenders, status updates, invoice confirmations — and those connections lived inside the old system. The fear was straightforward: move platforms, lose the connections, lose the customers. It's a fear that keeps a lot of carriers on legacy infrastructure long after they should have moved on. AI load entry landed first. Incoming load tenders that used to require a dispatcher to open, read, and key in the details were now being classified and entered automatically. Document processing — rate confirmations, PODs, bills of lading — moved through AI classification pipelines that sorted and filed without human touch.
